Addiction
Addiction is rarely about the substance or behaviour itself. More often, it’s about what that thing is helping you avoid, numb, or cope with. If you’re caught in a cycle that feels impossible to break, therapy can offer a space to understand what’s really going on, without shame or judgement.
You don’t have to understand it all to start talking about it
When habits become harmful
Addiction can involve alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, pornography, food, or many other behaviours. What they often have in common is that they started as a way of coping, a way of managing pain, stress, loneliness, or difficult feelings. Over time, the coping mechanism itself becomes the problem.
You might feel trapped, ashamed, or frustrated with yourself. You might have tried to stop many times. Addiction can be incredibly isolating, especially when you feel like you can’t talk about it openly.
How therapy can help
I won’t lecture you or tell you what you should be doing differently. In our sessions, we’ll look at the feelings and experiences that sit beneath the addiction, the things you might be trying to avoid or soothe.
By understanding the root of the pattern, rather than just the behaviour on the surface, many people find they’re able to relate to themselves and their struggles with more compassion. And from that place, real change becomes possible.
